Annular Space Pipe Fill

As part of a road reconstruction project in the Green Bay, WI. area, a new 8” diameter sewer pipe needed to be run through a 24” diameter tunnel bore underneath 290’ of existing roadway. Once the new pipe was in place, cellular concrete was chosen to fill in the annular space between the tunnel bore and the 8” pipe. Cellular concrete is an ideal material choice because of it’s ability to be pumped at low pressures and effectively fill the void. Also, cellular concrete reduces the risk of floating the pipe or collapsing it during the fill.

The CT-100D machine used on this project was owned by a customer, as was the project. Richway staff were on site to provide technical assistance and support. The CT-100D was used with a 2” pump hose that was connected to a 2” PVC pipe, serving as access to the annular space to be filled, which was 12 feet under ground. Density tests were done on both the injection and vent end of the pipe. Across 290’ of pipe there was only a difference of 1 PCF in density. As seen in the photos, a “test” tee was placed on the injection line to take samples for density checks on the cellular concrete, a critical part of quality control.
